The violinist and musical explorer's listening list ranges from Ravi Shankar to Irish music

There are few figures in today’s classical music who so perfectly embody the role of ambassador for music as Daniel Hope. His Hope@Home series on the ARTE channel provided viewers with exquisite chamber recitals and a much-need regular dose of, well, hope, at a time when concert halls were closed and most people were housebound (and continues to do so – it’s now on tour, thanks to the easing of lockdown restrictions in Germany). He’s also an artist with an insatiable and open curiosity about classical music’s relationship to the wider world, so it’s perfectly fitting that he’s provided the playlist for the latest edition of Songlines, our sister title.

His selection features tracks by acclaimed Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Zakir Hussain, plus two tracks by fellow violinists – the Hungarian Roby Lakatos and the Grammy winning American Mark O’Connor. In the interview which companies the playlist and can be found in the issue, Hope also discusses his love and affinity for Irish music, choosing a track by the traditional Irish band Lúnasa.

Daniel Hope's playlist is featured on the July issue covermount CD of Songlines and is also available as a download for digital subscribers. Click here to find out more, and to buy the issue or subscribe. Enjoy!
